You want an anecdote about Alexander the Great? Hmm. I think I have something in my library. It described him as a person who was not make decisions influenced by legends or superstitions. Look at my archaeology shelf. I believe the town that appears in the anecdote was located on the west coast of the Anatolian peninsula.

In one conquered town, there was a rope tied between a post and an ox-cart called the "Gordian Knot". There was a propgecy saying the one who untied the know would rule all of Asia. It just so happended that the great king himself cut the knot with his sword. The king then decreed "destiny is what man carves out for himself"
